Nakumatt business recovery plans following Westgate loss

 Regional retailer Nakumatt Holdings has, announced a series of elaborate business recovery plans following the tragic loss of its former Nakumatt Westgate hypermarket store. The loss of the flagship branch at the Westgate Shopping Mall after the recent terrorist attack has, occasioned Nakumatt Holdings a dent estimated at close to Kshs 2billion.
But in a swift bid to maintain the retailer’s growth pace, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director, Atul Shah, has now confirmed the scheduled opening of more than ten new branches across the region in the next ten months.
Nakumatt, he disclosed is also all set to launch a new generation multi-currency EMV MasterCard®PayPassTM Prepaid loyalty card to replace the current Nakumatt Smart Card before the end of this month. In the immediate period leading up to February next year, Nakumatt, will fast-track the opening of four branches in Uganda and two in Kenya as it seeks to plug the revenue leak occasioned by the loss of the major branch.
The next fortnight, Shah disclosed will see the opening of two new branches in Kampala, Uganda to be closely followed by a new store in Nairobi’s South C area and another one at Lavington before the end of the year. “We have suffered a major loss but time has come for us to dust ourselves and move forward with renewed vigour,” Shah affirmed. Adding that, “The loss of Westgate under mysterious circumstances provides us with the impetus to rapidly rollout new branches across the region.”
In Uganda, Nakumatt Holdings last Saturday unveiled its latest hypermarket store- Nakumatt Village located at the ultra-modern, Village Mall in Kampala’s Bugolobi area.
The new Us$ 4.5million Nakumatt Village, which restores Nakumatt’s overall branch count to 40, is also the fifth Nakumatt store in Uganda.
The store covers a shopping floor space of more than 31,000Square feet and features a range of modern retail amenities to complement the Village Mall’s distinct Italian architectural design. Among other fittings, Nakumatt Village is equipped with a retail travelator (in store ramp) for added shopping comfort and convenience.
Customers at the Nakumatt Village, Bugolobi will also enjoy the services of an in store bakery, butchery, hot food deli and a FoneXPress outlet. Alongside Nakumatt Village, plans are also underway for the opening of the sixth Nakumatt store in Uganda. The sixth store - Nakumatt Katwe- set for opening on Friday next week will be located at the Muganzirwaza shopping centre in Katwe, Kampala.

Still in Uganda, Nakumatt has lined up two more branch openings at Kisementi in the outskirts of Kampala and the lakeside town of Entebbe. At the upcoming Acacia Mall in Kisementi, Nakumatt Kisementi is set to open its doors in November, while the new Nakumatt Entebbe at Victoria Mall will open its doors in December.
