Regional retailer, Nakumatt Holdings, multimedia arm Planet Media Cinemas, is all set to open the first digital movie screen in Kisumu County this Friday.
The opening of the new Cinema screen at Kisumu’s Mega City Mall will also mark the swift return to business for Planet Media Cinemas following the recent destruction of its sole Cineplex at the Westgate Shopping Mall.
According to Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director, Atul Shah, plans for the première screening of movies at the Planet Media Kisumu Cineplex have been, completed as part of a US$ 1.2million programme to expand; Planet Media Cinemas presence.
During the opening session tomorrow, cinema goers will be, treated to complementary soda and popcorn ahead of the scheduled screening of the anticipated Bollywood hit- Krrish 3 this Saturday, which will be making its global première ahead of the Diwali festivities this weekend. The new digital screen will also be screening the current global box office hit Gravity, which premièred early this month.
“The opening of the new Planet Media Cinemas screens at Mega City present Nakumatt group with yet another opportunity to showcase our recovery path following the closure of the Westgate Planet Media Cineplex,” Shah explained. He added that, “Plans are underway to expand Planet Media Cinema Services across a number of other Nakumatt locations across the region to cater for the growing demand for quality consumer entertainment solutions’.”
Globally, movie theatres are rushing to complete their conversions to digital formats as all leading movie distributors continue to reaffirm a the 2013 cut-off date to cease analogue 35mm film distribution.
In Kenya, Shah, explained that Planet Media Cinemas have already installed new digital cinema systems with specifications technically known as 4K 3D and High Frame Rate (HFR) capabilities running on Dolby Screen Servers. Planet Media Cinemas is the first movie theatre house in Kenya to adopt the new digital film-screening standard. With digital format, patrons at Planet Media Cinemas enjoy better sound clarity,a smoother and more life-like picture as the eye sees twice the number of images per second.
