Comments made by Cofek (Consumers Federation of Kenya) on mobile phone tariff cuts and being linked to YU has been discredited. The mobile phone brand of Essar Telecom Kenya Limited has refuted statements made by the Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) claiming, “The views and comments made by Cofek (at their press conference on Tuesday 25th January, 2011) do not represent the views and opinions of Essar Telecom Kenya Limited” says Atul Chaturvedi, Country Manager Essar Telecom.
Mr. Chaturvedi who apparently was invited to the meeting on Tuesday, but declined to attend due to what was considered session that would not have resulted in an amicable conclusion among the four industry players, from whom Essar has a different business model said, it has been noted that some of the statements made by Cofek also appear to be somewhat biased against the CCK and price cuts, yet Cofek claim to be working in the best interests of consumers.
Mr. Chaturvedi has also gone further to fully support the CCK in their statements that tariffs are yet to reach rock bottom. “Essar believes in passing on legitimate benefits to consumers, while at the same time ensuring economic and industry health do not get compromised in the process” says Mr. Caturvedi.
He deeply regretted that views expressed by Cofek do not represent those of Essar Telecom Kenya Limited in any way and YU supports CCK in ensuring legitimate benefits trickle to consumers. YU which in August 2010 reduced its tariffs after a reduction on the interconnect rate by the CCK says as a result, was able to pass on a tariff reduction benefit to its consumers on its network, across other networks, international calls and data
