Liquid Telecom recently won the VSAT Provider of the
Year category at this year’s SatCom Star Awards. Now in their 17th year, The SatCom Star Awards
celebrated the continued growth and success of satellite and telecommunications
in Africa by honouring the top satellite and telecommunications projects and
influencers throughout Africa. Winning a SatCom Star Award is seen as a recognizable
standard of industry excellence and innovation.
The winners were announced at a ceremony in
Johannesburg with Liquid Telecom beating off strong competition from Isat
Networks and the African Development Bank, which were also shortlisted.
Liquid’s success is due to the outstanding service it
provides to customers, the wide reach of its satellite network across the
continent, the fast speeds and low latency of its network along with affordable
pricing based on the company’s belief that broadband connectivity is an
entitlement for everybody.
Nic Rudnick, CEO of Liquid Telecom, said “What a
fantastic achievement for our satellite team who work tirelessly to provide our
customers with the best satellite service in Africa. I congratulate them all on
becoming a SatCom Star.”
Liquid Telecom’s satellite customers include out of
town offices such as bank branches, national parks and game lodges, remote
mining and exploration companies, Governments, schools and NGO deployments.
As part of a multi-million dollar (US) investment in
its satellite business, Liquid Telecom recently became the first operator to
build a satellite hub at Teraco’s vendor-neutral earth station in South Africa.
This hub enables Liquid Telecom to route African traffic in Africa rather than
backhauling it via Europe as many operators need to do. By keeping African data
in Africa, Liquid Telecom has considerably reduced latency and measurably
increased connectivity speeds for its customers.
The award follows on the heels of another success for
Liquid Telecom; last month The East Africa Data Centre and Liquid Telecom Kenya
were honoured at the 2013 Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation awards.
The carrier-neutral data centre based in Nairobi was
named in the “Best Business Service Innovation” category alongside Liquid
Telecom Kenya for their pioneering work in building the most connected data
centre in East Africa.
Each year these prestigious global awards, organized by
the much-respected Global Telecoms Business magazine, celebrate the joint work
of vendors and operators in innovative projects that better serve the telecom
industry’s end customers.
